I had one of the toys when I was a child ( a police car i think) the little robot “plugged” into the hood of the car.

They were called Targetmasters. I believe the one that you had was Blurr.
Sounds like either a Powermaster Transformers or a Targetmaster Transformers to me. The Powermaster’s had an egine that plugged into their hood. There were 3 cars, Optimus Prime, and 3 jets and a military vehicle.
On Targetmaster’s there is a gun that plugs into a hood. Here is an example of a Targetmaster Blurr.
